Give your baby a little TLC.

Show your grill some love with cleaning how-tos from Chris and Mike Peters, grilling experts from the KCBS Great American BBQ Tour. After a long day of splattering her with grimy sauces and greasy meat, your grill deserves a good rub down. And depending on how often you grill, a thorough cleaning every three to six months.

how to clean a gas grill

Step 1

First things first: check for gas leaks. Spray soapy water on the tubes. If bubbles appear, there's a leak. Before doing anything, replace leaky parts ASAP. If everything's in good shape, proceed to Step 2 and begin the cleaning process.

Step 2

Disconnect the grill from the gas tank. Turn all control knobs to "off" and if possible, remove the tank.

Step 3

Take a small tub or bucket, fill it with warm water and pour in some dishwashing soap. Remove the grill racks and let them sit in the bucket for at least 30 minutes. Longer, if the grease is really caked on there.

Step 4

While the grills are soaking, let's start on the burners. Poke a pipe cleaner through the burner holes to dig out the grease. Then, spray a degreaser and let it set for an hour or so. Dip a SCOTT® Shop Towel in some warm water and scrub the grime away.

Step 5

Use a sturdy spatula to scrape away residue on the inside walls and remove loose debris with a soft wire brush.

Step 6

Ideally, the outside of the grill should be scrubbed down before the grill has cooled. Using warm water and a mild detergent or a good degreaser, wipe down the outside of the grill, using (yup, you guessed it) SCOTT® Shop Towels. Then, rinse with hot water and wipe dry.

Step 7

Back to the grates, after they've finished soaking, rinse off the excess soap. And if any baked-on grease remains, use a brush to remove it.

Step 8

Hook the grill back up to the gas. And next time you grill, spray on a little cooking oil to get that baby going again. Or if you want to get go au natural, use half an onion to get that non-stick feeling.
